MaineGeneral Health Opens New Hospital Using RTLS for Multiple Applications

In November 2013, MaineGeneral Medical Center opened the Alfond Center for Health, a 640,000-square-foot state-of-the-art hospital in Augusta, ME. The new facility consolidates inpatient services from two aging facilities located 20 miles apart. The 192-bed hospital opened with a Real-time Locating System (RTLS) from Versus Technology, Inc. (OTC Pink: VSTI) (PINKSHEETS: VSTI), installed throughout, which drives automation and efficiency in several departments.

Like many healthcare systems in the U.S., MaineGeneral is seeking ways to become more efficient as they experience increases in patient volume brought on by the Affordable Care Act, as well as declining CMS reimbursement. Automating workflows with RTLS is part of the system's strategy to continue providing top-quality care in the face of these challenges.

Contracting with Canfield Systems, a Certified Versus System Integrator in Scarborough, Maine, MaineGeneral launched RTLS with seven different Versus applications:

-          Operating Room Patient Flow

-          Staff Assist

-          Nurse Call Automation

-          Nurse Location

-          Asset Tracking

-          RTLS Analytics

-          Patient Wander Alerts

One of the design goals was to improve nursing workflow, according to Mark St. John, administrative director, Technology Services. "The Versus integration with Rauland R5 nurse call was a big step in the right direction. Now, nurse call alarms are cancelled and dome lights are lit automatically when nurses enter patient rooms wearing a Versus badge. That saves the nurses steps and provides better response for our patients," St. John says. "In the future we hope to take more advantage of staff locator functions and reporting on response times."

St. John also applauds Versus' capabilities in the surgical suite. "Versus has been effective as a patient locator, allowing us to automatically show patients' status as they move through the various stages involved in surgery."
