E-Waste Systems, Inc. (OTCQB: EWSI) ("EWSI," "EWS," "eWaste Systems," or the "Company"), an electronic waste management, environmentally focused services and technology company, participated in Goodwill's first-ever Earth Day electronics recycling event.
EWS personnel from the newly opened Cincinnati facility joined a group of enthusiastic Goodwill employees at Ohio Valley Goodwill's headquarters location in the village of Woodlawn, and together they collected over 20,000 pounds of old electronics. Residents were pleased to have the outlet for their obsolete items, and were surprised that the opportunity existed to donate items rather than having to pay fees.
"With the opening of our new facility and so many burgeoning local relationships, we are creating a strong presence in the greater Cincinnati area," commented Julie Peterson, President of eWaste Systems. "This event with Ohio Valley Goodwill marks yet another important milestone in our goals of achieving total sustainability because it is raising awareness on an issue that is long overdue, and it's through a partnership with an institution built on the very foundation of responsible re-use and recycling."
Goodwill is more often associated with clothing and furniture, but Ohio Valley Goodwill announced earlier in the year that they have been accepting electronics at each of their locations for the last two years and point to the fact that working with Goodwill means engaging in responsible recycling practices that have been driven by over a hundred years of re-use and recycling programs(1)(2).
For eWaste systems, electronics recycling drives are excellent channels for obtaining stock to feed operations. Significant operational strides have been taken over the course of the last 18 months in this particular aspect of the business both domestically and abroad. Just one week prior, EWS teamed up with Ohio's AGC Automotive for their annual e-waste recycling event(3), representing their largest and most successful event to date. Combined with the Goodwill Earth Day event, eWaste Systems Cincinnati was able to collect over 80,000 pounds of feedstock and expects the trend to continue.
"The demands for proper recycling outlets, particularly for specialty items, are greater than ever," added Ms. Peterson. "Many states banned the landfilling of electronics, and many others are introducing new bills to do so(4), and while this legislation creates the framework for meaningful progress, there is still confusion on how to properly dispose of unwanted items. We are working to change all of that by building a network that will eventually integrate e-waste recycling as a fixture in our daily lives, in the way we have seen bottle and can recycling progress in past decades."
