Clariphy Announces Industry’s First Standard Product Coherent SoC Enabling 100G, 200G and 400G Optical Transmission

IRVINE, CA, via eTeligisClariPhy Communications, Inc., a leading developer of ultra-high speed systems-on-chip (SoCs) for data networking, today announced its LightSpeed-II™ family of coherent SoCs. Building upon ClariPhy's widely deployed LightSpeed™ single-on-chip 40G coherent SoCs, LightSpeed-II™ offers a multi-rate, multi-modulation architecture that supports data rates from 40G to 200G per wavelength with programmable spectral efficiency, providing a powerful coherent transmission engine for the next generation of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) software defined networks (SDNs). Its wide range of power-performance options enables LightSpeed-II™ to deliver best in class OSNR and reach performance in long haul and submarine applications, while setting a new industry standard for low power in metro applications. As a standard product family that is generally available to the industry, LightSpeed-II™ will for the first time enable all OEMs to access the next generation of coherent technology.

100G coherent has become a critical technology in DWDM transmission, enabling service providers to economically scale their optical networks to support the massive growth in internet traffic being driven by cloud, video and mobile applications. According to market research firm Infonetics, 100G coherent port shipments tripled in 2013 over the previous year, and by 2016 the majority of service providers' spending in long haul networks will be on 100G and higher rates.

LightSpeed-II™ is the industry's first standard product SoC that supports 200G 16QAM modulation on a single wavelength, and that enables 400G dual-carrier super channels. The use of 200G 16QAM modulation doubles the data rate capability of 100G coherent optical components, effectively cutting cost per bit in half. It is the key building block for 400G line cards, supporting high-density 100G muxponder applications and providing the 400G transport capability required for future 400G Ethernet router deployments.

LightSpeed-II™ is also the industry's first standard product SoC to integrate a transmit DSP with high-speed digital to analog converter (DAC), eliminating the need for a separate transmit mux while enabling advanced features like spectral shaping, flexible grid DWDM and 16QAM modulation. The state of the art 28nm CMOS SoC contains a high speed analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converter, a coherent DSP supporting BPSK, QPSK and 16QAM modulation, digital transmit filter, advanced soft decision forward error correction (SDFEC) and an integrated OTN framer/mapper. ClariPhy's high-performance DSP and SDFEC combine to offer significant improvement in OSNR sensitivity – critical in 100G ultra long haul and submarine applications – compared to existing technologies. An embedded microprocessor running a feature-rich software stack, as well as powerful optical monitoring capabilities, make LightSpeed-II™ ideal for use in SDNs.

"We are very pleased to introduce the LightSpeed-II™ product family, which enables OEMs to build cost-effective transport products with unprecedented levels of performance and flexibility," said Nariman Yousefi, ClariPhy's chief executive officer. "We believe LightSpeed-II™ represents a milestone in performance and integration in the communications SoC Industry, and will drive a new generation of best-in-class optical transport products."

The LightSpeed-II™ SoC will sample to customers this month, and will be in full production this year.
