About the Author Renate Stoever:
Renate Stoever was born in the German city of Plauen in the state of Saxony before the start of the Second World War. Renate's early childhood was safe and happy, but all that changed drastically during and after World War II. Those years were a constant struggle to stay alive.
At the end of the war, Renate's home state was first occupied by American troops, but six weeks later, Russian troops moved in due to the Allies decision at the Yalta conference in February 1945. Consequently, Renate's part of Germany became known as Communist East Germany.
Renate's father Kurt fled to West Germany in the spring of 1947. Braving ice, snow and great danger, Renate, her mother Gertraud, and little sister Margit followed him Christmas 1947.
After 5 years of living in primitive barracks outside a charming, medieval Bavarian town in the American Sector of West Germany, Renate and her family emigrated to The United States of America in 1953. Within a week of her 1953 arrival in the United States, Renate started a job beading moccasin-tops. A year later she used her artistic ability to become a top designer in the Lace and Embroidery industry, where she became the first female in a male-dominated profession.
Life as a German immigrant was not easy, but through hard work and frugal living, Renate and her family were able to create a new home, their first real home since 1945. Renate married Fred Stover in 1962 and helped her husband establish a successful Wall Street firm. They became happy parents when their son Roland was born in 1971 and Renate became a stay-at-home Mom.
In time Renate started to paint, specializing in flowers and Native American themes, which resulted in a lot of exhibits and interviews with TV News Media. After winning a writing competition in the "New Yorker Staats Zeitung," a German-American weekly newspaper, friends encouraged Renate to spend more time writing.
About Fred Stoever:
At age 15, Fred Stoever was working in his father's business, carrying stoves up and down narrow tenement stairs with grown men. Some were old black coal stoves and combination stoves, which were very heavy to say the least. The good news was that Fred could feel himself getting stronger as the summer wore on, which helped him make the Leonia High School wrestling team. The negative was that Fred had to work every Saturday while his friends were enjoying the Jersey Shore.
When it was time to go to college, Fred based his selection on information he found in Lovejoy's College Catalogue. As a 17 year old doing the thinking, he chose Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) because it was further south so he would be able to start playing baseball earlier in the spring. Also, it was one of the few colleges that was half boys and half girls. Fred thought that combination would give him better chance at both -- Girls and Baseball. What else could a young man want?
Of course there was also studying which Fred did just enough to skate by in his difficult economics courses. For the last six months, he turned on the jets resulting in a 91st percentile achievement on the Graduate Record Exam which was given at every Ivy League college.
Fred was in the starting lineup in three different sports during his senior year at McDaniel College -- baseball, wrestling and soccer. Soon after graduation he was offered a professional baseball contract, but that was just before he was scheduled to join the Army. When his active duty was over he went back to working in his father's company until his father said to "get out and stand on your own two feet."
Several magical events landed him a back office Wall Street job but in slightly more than three years after writing dozens of profit and loss scenarios and with financial help from his wife Renate and small loans from his father and father-in-law, he opened his own Wall Street Bond firm with less than 25% of what was generally acknowledged to be the absolute minimum amount of capital required.
Fred honored his father by taking a very similar business name Stoever Glass & Co. His company soon became very profitable surprising everyone including his father.
Later Fred began painting wildlife in his spare time winning a second place in an Artist Magazine contest. Wildlife was one of the few things Fred liked even more than baseball, so in 1969 he and Renate took a wildlife trip to Africa and India.
While in India, Fred put up financing for a one square mile enclosure to save a critically endangered deer. It was a project conceived by Ranjit Sinh and he and Fred clicked right away, becoming immediate friends. A year later, Fred found out that Ranjit was the son of the Maharaja of Wankanar. They have traveled the world together photographing wildlife. Fred always says he has the world's best and truest best friend.
Fred contributes to McDaniel College that he says greatly "changed his life for the better" and along with Renate, they have donated to The Pine Ridge Sioux Indian Reservation, The Conservation Society, and St. Josephs Indian School.
Fred and Renate are happily married for over 50 years. They are the proud parents of Roland Stoever.
